West Side Story

"West Side Story" will be presented by Stanford's Ram's Head Theatrical Society tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium. The production features music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents. It will be directed by recent Stanford graduate Sean Fenton, with new choreography by junior Lauren Uyeshiro.

Tickets are $15 general; $9 for Stanford students. Tickets will be on sale weekday afternoons in White Plaza and will also be available at the door. For more information visit www.stanford.edu/group/rams-head.

Gregory Wait will conduct the Oratorio Society and Orchestra tonight. The group will perform "Handel's Messiah" in its entirety.

Handel's Messiah

"Handel's Messiah" will be performed tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Palo Alto, 1985 Louis Road (at Embarcadero) in Palo Alto. The Oratorio Society and Orchestra, conducted by Gregory Wait, will perform the entire piece, along with some rarely heard choruses. The Valparaiso Singers will perform tonight at the Menlo Park Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Good Friday concert

An Easter concert will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Menlo Park Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1105 Valparaiso Ave., Menlo Park. The concert will feature the Valparaiso Singers, who will be accompanied on piano and organ by James Welch. The program will include sacred music by Stanford, Faure, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Gounod and others. Soprano Barbara Cramer will be the guest soloist. Admission is free. "Spatial Forms," featuring paintings by John Mancini, opens on Saturday and will be on view through May 23 at Gallery Europa, 535 Bryant St. in Palo Alto. Emsemble Tartit will perform tonight at Stanford's Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

Desert blues

Ensemble Tartit will perform tonight at 8 p.m. in Dinkelspiel Auditorium on the Stanford University campus. The group is comprised of nomadic Tuaregs from Mali's northern desert who are preserving their traditional "desert blues" music. Ensemble Tartit will perform both historical pieces (some more than a century old) and more recent compositions inspired by contemporary events that pay homage to local heroes. A pre-performance discussion with Thomas K. Seligman, director of the Cantor Arts Center, will take place at 6:45 p.m. and will be open to the public free of charge. The discussion will center on the Tuareg culture.

Tickets for the performance are $34/$30. Half-price tickets are available for young people ages 15 and under, and discounts are available for students.
