Benefit concert to aid RussiansAs part of their ongoing mission to aid hospitals and orphanages in Voronezh, Russia, the Valparaiso Singers will present a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 25, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1105 Valparaiso Ave. in Menlo Park. Three years ago, the Valparaiso Singers traveled to the city of Voronezh in Russia, bringing 60 boxes of medical equipment, clothing, quilts, toys, and linens for a military hospital for veterans of the Chechnya war, and a children's hospital. The supplies were donated by local residents, businesses and churches. The Valparaiso Singers performed in Moscow and in Voronezh, where they were joined by the Blagovest Choir in a public concert. The October 25 Valparaiso Singers concert will include a program of folk songs, Broadway favorites, and American spirituals. Suggested donation is $10. Judith Stewart directs the choir, with James Welch as accompanist. Ms. Stewart also heads the Valparaiso Humanitarian Foundation. For more information, call Ms. Stewart at 856-9700. |
