Lighted Yacht Parade in Jack London Square on Dec. 6

Encinal Yacht Club, Oakland Yacht Club and Marina Village Yacht Harbor are hosting the 27th Annual Lighted Yacht parade to benefit Oakland Firefighters’ Random Acts of Kindness Program. More than 100 lighted and decorated yachts will parade through the Oakland Estuary passing by Jack London Square. Activities on land include arts and crafts. Live entertainment keeps the atmosphere cheerful and bountiful food keeps the whole family energetic.

Festivities on land begin at 3pm. Jack London Square is illuminated by a 65-foot holiday tree laden with thousands of lights and ornaments. Food vendors will prepare tasty food. Arts and crafts vendors will offer attractive wares brimming with ethnic and local food vendors. Also present will be Oakland arts and crafts vendors, choirs and the dancing Christmas trees.

FYI, adults: It’s possible to enjoy the Lighted Yacht parade festivities and cruise the Oakland estuary aboard the USS Potomac, also known as President Roosevelt’s' Floating White House (5-8pm). Admission to this fund-raising event is $100. Guests feast on hors d'oeuvres, and wine, champagne and soft drinks. Call 510-627-1215 for more information about this event and the USS Potomac. www.usspotomac.org.

Christmas Crèche Exhibit

The Mormon Church in Menlo Park hosts this one-of-a-kind exhibit. Crèche is a three-dimensional artistic representation of the birth of Jesus. While focusing on the central figures of the mother Mary and the Christ Child, crèche artists often telescope time and place to bring together a host of earthly and heavenly participants – shepherds, animals, angels, wise men and commoners.

This 16th annual exhibit features more than 500 nativity scenes from 65 countries worldwide. Crafted from a wide range of material (banana bark to brass to volcanic ash to yak fur), artisans have lovingly prepared these scenarios for everyone to enjoy, regardless of religion.

A Children’s Room will feature demonstrations of woodworking, pottery, bread making and hands-on activities for kids. Live holiday music will enhance the mood on the evenings of Dec. 6 and 7. See below.
